California’s economy

Agriculture is one of the leading activities in California. The fertile soil, the warm weather, and a system of dams and irrigation projects that water the Central Valley make it possible to grow a variety of crops, from cotton to olives, oranges, and many kinds of fruits and vegetables. California is one of the greatest wine-producing regions in the world. The vineyards of Sonoma and Napa Valley produce some great wines, which in the last twenty years have made California famous all over the world.
Manufacturing is California’s most important industry: cars, ships, aircraft, electronic equipment, and processed food, from fish to fruit and vegetables. High-tech industries working in electronics, aerospace and communications are concentrated in ‘Silicon Valley’, south of San Francisco.
Tourismis an important sector of California’s economy. The warm, sunny climate and the great variety of landscape, with mountains, redwood forests and beautiful rock coast in the north, and sandy beaches, rich gardens and deserts in the south, attract vacationers all the year round. Outdoor activities and water sports are part of South California lifestyle.
