A simple picture used to denote a program, command, file, or concept in a GUI such as Windows or the Macintosh.

IGC (Intergovernmental Conference): Conferenza intergovernativa.
This is the term used to describe negotiations between the Member States' governments with a view to amending the Treaties. An IGC is of major importance as regards European integration, where changes in the institutional and legal have always been the outcome of intergovernmental conferences (e.g. Single European Act and Treaty on European Union).

Impeachment: Incriminazione, messa in stato di accusa.
An accusation of misconduct brought against a person holding public office. The House of Representatives has the sole power to bring charges of impeachment, and the Senate has sole authority to try the case. Conviction requires a two-thirds majority. President Richard Nixon (1913-94) resigned as president in 1974 rather than face impeachment over his part in the Watergate scandal. The only other U.S. president to be impeached was Andrew Johnson in 1868. He was acquitted by the Senate.

To carry out or put into practice.

Impolite: Scortese, sgarbato, maleducato.
Not having or showing good manners, sensitivity to other people's feeling and/or correct social behaviour; rude.

(To) Import: Importare.
To move an item or file into an application or environment which is different than that native to it. The file is converted to the new format while attempting to change as little as possible about the appearance of the file when printed. For instance, MS Word for the Macintosh is able to import files from a few MS-DOS word processors.

In depth: In profondità, in maniera approfondita.
Going beneath the surface or appearance of things; done with great thoroughness.

Inalienable right: Diritti inalienabili.
A right that is derived from natural law, a God-given right that cannot be taken away. The Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Income: Reddito.
An accounting term defining the money received by a business in a given period of time as a result of operating the business; the goods and services sold. Also called revenue sales. Sometimes used to mean profit or earnings as a shortened form of net income.

As defined by the Census Bureau income is wage or salary income; self-employment income; interest, dividend, or net rental income; Social Security income; public assistance income; all other income, which includes unemployment compensation.

Indented style: Stile rientrato.
The indented format either has all entries tight against the left-hand margin, or sets the references and the date to the right margin with the remaining entries placed against the left margin but indents each paragraph by five or six spaces.

A document submitted by a grand jury to a court, accusing an individual of a specific crime.

Information highway: Autostrada informatica.
A world wide combination of fiber optic cable and satellite receivers in a future time when homes and offices around the world will be linked by highways of electronic information that can be traversed interactively both to and from a connected user. In homes and offices, a single piece of interactive TV digital television equipment (let's call it the PCTV computer/television superhighways terminal) will combine what are now television sets, telephones, stereos, videotape players, videodisc players, compact disc players, and computers.

Injunction: Ingiunzione legale.
A legal order from a court that prevents an individual or group from carrying out a certain action.

Inquiry: Lettera di richiesta di informazioni.
The purpose of this kind of letter is to obtain information from the reader.

Inside address: Indirizzo del destinatario.
The inside address is your reader's full address. This includes the reader's: name, position, organisation, as the company calls itself, complete mailing address. If your reader has a courtesy title then use it. Otherwise use Mr. or Ms. These should also appear identically on the envelope.

Insolvent: Insolvente.
A person or company having insufficient assets to meet debts and liabilities.

Institutions: Istituzioni.
The central decision-making bodies of the EU, with a special status in treaties and in practice.

Intangible goods: Beni immateriali.
Immaterial goods or services.

Intelligence: Intelligenza, informazione.
Ability to learn, reason and understand; information.

(To) Interact: Interagire.
To have an action on each other or something else or working close together.

Interactive multimedia: Multimedia interattivi.
An application involving substantial user input or control and presenting at least two of the following: text, graphics, sound, image, video, and animation. Applications can be in the areas of education, entertainment, information and publishing, and transactions.

Interest: Interesse.
What a borrower pays for the privilege of using someone else's money for a given period of time.

Interface: Interfaccia.
Part of a computer, program, or peripheral that communicates with other components. Interface also refers to the user interface. Intermediary: Intermediario.
An entity standing between parties to funding or a business transaction. An intermediary may be at risk.

Internal Market: Mercato interno.
A common market decided upon in 1985 and implemented by the end of 1992.

Internet: An international grouping of computer networks. The Internet started as a relatively tiny United States Department of Defence (DOD) Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) project in 1969. It commenced with the networking of four computers. The Internet was not widely known between 1969 and 1991. Its popularity exploded when HTML, HTTP, and the World Wide Web made it much easier to use the Internet.

Internet 2: The Internet 2 Consortium of more than 100 universities and other organizations collaborating to develop the next-generation Internet technology. In addition to bandwidth issues, the Consortium is dealing with such issues as audio and video integration, interactive distance learning, telemedicine, online research collaboration, and real-time simulation and modeling.

Internet appliance: Apparecchiatura Internet.
A computer designed to support client access to the Web (i.e. browsing) but without support for any popular PC operating systems or applications. Targeted to be substantially less expensive than a PC, some Internet appliances will be able to use either a PC monitor or a TV for display.

Interstitial: A Web page not requested by a user, usually containing an advertisement, that appears on the user's screen, often in an automatically opened new browser, when the user has clicked on a link to move from one Web page to another. The page that the user originally requested continues to load and the interstitial is programmed to disappear after a few seconds or when the user clicks on it to acknowledge having seen it. Interstitial are interruptive, like television advertising, rather than passive, like Web banner advertising.

An occasion when a person is asked questions by one or more people either to decide whether he or she is a suitable person to be given a job or about his/her opinion.

Intranet: The use of the Internet and Internet-type software for sub-systems of computing for private organizations and individuals. Companies are storing key forms and documents on web sites inside their operations, making it easy for employees to find information using standard web browsers, not special-purpose database programs. Most Intranets use the "free" connections of the Internet, and turn the Internet into an Intranet with passwords or other access barriers to documents and databases.

An occasion of telling people each other's name.

Inventory: Scorte, giacenze, inventario.
A stock of goods or resources held by a buyer or seller in order to reduce the cost of exchange or production.

Investment firm: Società di investimento.
Companies that help other companies raise capital through the sale of new stock and bonds.

Investor: Investitore, risparmiatore.
Any person who provides equity capital to a company; a person who invests; a person who buys shares of stock in a company in return for anticipated company profitability and payment of dividends to the investor.

Invoice: Fattura.
A notification of amount due for goods that were delivered or services that were performed. The invoice is prepared by the seller and submitted to the purchaser. It is usually numbered and gives the names and addresses of buyer and seller; an order number, if any, and adte of the order; details of goods and services supplied; cost of the goods and VAT details. In small business an invoice is most often called a bill.

To cause someone, or oneself, to become connected or concerned; to have as a necessary part or result.

ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network means of connecting to digital networks, including the Internet, via a common (digital) telephone line. It is the fastest way for many individuals to connect to digital networks via a modem. However, at the present capacity of 128,000 Bps, it is very slow relative to cable TV modems that can do over 1 million Bps and exponentially faster direct connections that do not use modems at all.

ISO: The International Organisation for Standardisation is responsible for preparing international standards on all subjects except those covered by IEC.
