Webs require a technological standard and increasing returns to scale but work without formal alliances. They spread risk, reduce complexity, and enhance an industry's overall ability to innovate.

Web document: Documento Web.
An HTML document, Gopher document, a PDF document, or some other document that is browsable on the Internet.

Web node: Nodo Web.
This term is synonymous with Web site or Web server.

Web page: Pagina Web.
An HTML document that is accessible on the Web.

Web space: Spazio Web.
This term refers to the space created by the World Wide Web.

Web streaming: Live playback of media files on the web. The most common way to execute media files (audio and video) is to download those files into a local computer and then launch a plug-in or applications program to execute the media file in question. Users have an option of saving the files, although the usual default condition is only to store the file temporarily. Web streaming is quite different. In that case, audio or video files play in real time without having to wait for full downloads of the files.

Web surfing: Navigare in rete.
Browsing the www using a Web browser. Users search for information, chat lines, business transactions, and many other purposes. Surfing generally refers to the "pull". Casting (webcasting, netcasting) generally refers to the "push" approach where the user selects channels for preferred types of information and then lets the channel push updates automatically into the user's computer.

Web TV: A way of accessing Internet and e-mail service via a set-top box, a television set, a standard phone line, and a subscription-based online service called Web TV Network.

Webcasting: Trasmissione in rete.
Use of the World Wide Web to broadcast information. Unlike typical surfing, which relies on a pull method of transferring web pages, webcasting uses a "push" combination of technologies to send information to users' computers. This is also referred to as "netcasting." Users get updates of streams of information in requested categories. Users can subscribe to a "channel," download software to a computer, and then streams of automatic updates follow.

Webmaster: The person in charge of administrating a World Wide Web site.

WEU: Unione dell'Europa occidentale.
Western European Union is an organisation which was set up in 1948 for the purposes of co-operation on defence and security. It consists of 28 countries with four different types of status. Member States, associate members, observers and associate partners. The EU countries have the status of Member State, except Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland and Sweden, which have observer status.

White Paper: Libro bianco.
Commission White Papers are documents containing proposals for Community action in a specific area. In some cases they follow a Green Paper published to launch a consultation process at European level. Examples include the White Papers on the completion of the internal market, on growth, competitiveness and employment and the approximation of the laws of the associated states of Central and Eastern Europe in areas of relevance to the internal market. When a White Paper has been favourably received by the Council, it can become the action programme for the Union in the area concerned.

Wholesale: Ingrosso, vendita all'ingrosso.
The sale of goods or services in large quantities and at lower prices to someone other than consumers. Sales to a retail businesses, jobbers, merchants, manufacturers, industrial firms, commercial, businesses and institutions or relating thereto. Sometimes called middle-person, middleman or distributor. As opposed to retail.

Wholesaler: Grossista.
A company that handles the resale of goods in large quantities and serves retailers.

Withhold: Qualcosa che viene tenuto nascosto, celato.
A withhold is a consciously or unconsciously held thought or feeling that needs to be communicated but which is withheld due to some uncomfortable emotional charge associated with the item in question.

Work experience: Esperienza lavorativa.
It includes vacation and part-time work, paid or unpaid, as well as full-time jobs. The fact that you have had a job is relevant, even if the setting may not be. It is important to outline how you did these jobs rather than merely give a job description.

Working capital: Capitale netto di esercizio.
Refers to the amount of current assets which has been financed from long-term sources of finance. Gross working capital has been alternatively defined as the sum of all current assets while net working capital is the amount by which current assets exceed current liabilities. The size of working capital has been an indicator of the liquidity and solvency of a company particularly when related to other financial indicators in the form of financial ratios.

Worth: Valore.
Material value, especially when expressed in terms of money; the quantity or amount of something that can be exchanged for an amount of money; wealth; possessions; riches.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get): The term is used mainly for newer types of software that display on the screen exactly what will appear after being printed.
